Gone but not Forgotten
Photopolymer print, chine collé with graphite
The lion and wording/scroll in this print make reference to the Anglo Boer war. I am South African and my father’s Grandfather and Great Uncle fought in the Boer war and although my father was always very fascinated with the stories from the Boer war – I know very little about my family history, and have very little to document it. The Lion and scroll are taken from postcards produced during the war. The postcard made the Boer War a very visual war. Postcards often becoming visual propaganda. The Lion from an English postcard and the scroll from the Dutch (Afrikaans) and so they are used to mark a time is my father’s history (and mine). Through my research my understanding is that Eendragt maakt Magt (Unity is Strength) was a slogan for the Boers during the Anglo Boer War and later used by the South Africans in the First World War.
